Plate Carrier

A load-bearing vest designed to hold hard armor plates and organize mission-essential equipment.

In the Field
Most plate carriers fail at fit, not material. A carrier that rides too high presses on the throat when you kneel. A carrier that rides too low leaves the heart exposed every time you raise your weapon. A cummerbund that is too tight restricts breathing over a long deployment. Carrier selection is a mission question before it is a material question: the right setup for a brief warrant service is not the right setup for a twelve-hour perimeter, and neither is the right setup for a range day.
Common Mistake
Selecting a carrier based on brand or material before confirming the fit on the operator who will wear it.

Technical Detail

A plate carrier is a load-bearing garment designed to hold rigid ballistic armor plates, typically at the chest and back, and often with side plate pockets. Carriers are distinct from soft armor concealable vests, which house flexible ballistic panels for lower-visibility wear.

Carriers vary by cut (slick, minimalist, full), weight, cummerbund design, and attachment systems (MOLLE, laser-cut, hybrid). Carrier selection is driven by threat profile, mission duration, and integration with other gear. A plate carrier used during a brief warrant service differs from one used during a sustained SWAT deployment.

Proper fit is critical. An incorrectly sized carrier or plate can leave critical organs uncovered or restrict mobility. The top of the plate should align with the suprasternal notch, and the bottom should end at the lower rib line.
