Stop the Bleed is a 2-hour hands-on course that teaches any person to recognize life-threatening bleeding and take immediate action. Students learn to apply direct pressure, pack a wound, and apply a tourniquet. No medical background required. Appropriate for schools, businesses, houses of worship, event staff, and any organization that wants its people prepared to act before EMS arrives.
Stop the Bleed is a 2-hour hands-on bleeding control course developed by the American College of Surgeons in response to mass casualty events where bystanders were present but unable to intervene. The course is built on a single premise: a person who is bleeding from a life-threatening wound can die in minutes, and the person closest to them has the best chance of saving their life -- if they know what to do.
The course requires no prior medical training and no ongoing certification. It is designed to be taught to any adult in any setting.
Skills taught include:
- Recognizing when bleeding is life-threatening
- Calling for help and directing bystanders
- Applying direct pressure effectively
- Wound packing with gauze
- Tourniquet application on extremity wounds
Students practice each skill on training aids and leave the course with the muscle memory to act under stress.
