PHTLS-FR
PHTLS-FR delivers the core trauma care content of the full PHTLS provider course in an 8-hour format built for firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical responders, and rescue personnel. Students learn hemorrhage control, airway management, and trauma assessment through skills stations and patient scenarios. Completion awards 8 CAPCE credits and a 4-year PHTLS-FR wallet card.
PHTLS for First Responders is an 8-hour classroom course that takes the evidence-based trauma care content from the PHTLS curriculum and delivers it in a format that is directly relevant to firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical responders, and rescue personnel.
The course is built around the skills a non-EMS first responder needs in the first minutes after a traumatic injury -- before advanced medical care arrives. Students work through life-saving interventions including hemorrhage control, airway positioning, and trauma assessment using the same systematic approach that forms the foundation of PHTLS provider training.
Topics covered include:
- Scene safety and threat assessment
- Life-threatening hemorrhage control including tourniquet application and wound packing
- Airway management and positioning
- Recognition of shock
- Patient movement and extraction basics
- Trauma patient scenarios and skills stations
Completion awards a certificate of completion, a 4-year PHTLS-FR wallet card, and 8 hours of CAPCE credit recognized by NREMT. Course materials include a student manual for ongoing reference.
PHTLS-FR is appropriate for emergency medical responders, firefighters, rescue personnel, and law enforcement officers. No prior medical training required.
