First on Scene is a 4-hour community emergency response course for people with no medical background. Students learn how to call for help, control severe bleeding, recognize cardiac arrest, and keep a patient stable until EMS arrives. Designed for teachers, community members, event staff, and anyone who wants to be prepared to act in the first minutes of an emergency.
First on Scene is a 4-hour community emergency response course developed by NAEMT and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. It is designed for people with no medical background who want to be prepared to help in the minutes before EMS arrives.
Topics covered include:
- Calling for help and directing bystanders at an emergency scene
- Scene safety and self-protection
- Recognition of life-threatening bleeding
- Direct pressure, wound packing, and tourniquet application
- Recognition of cardiac arrest
- Hands-only CPR
- AED use
- Airway management: choking response and recovery position
- Recognition of stroke and other sudden medical emergencies
